Organizational Change & Development
Chapter 1 Assignment

1. Why do organizations undergo change?
Organizations need to change to become more effective, productive, and satisfying to members. Changes are required as customers demand more, technologies are developed with a rapidly changing life cycle and investors demand results. This requires that organizations develop new strategies, economic structures, technologies, organizational structures, and processes. Employees learn new skills as jobs change or are eliminated.

2. What is change?
Change is something that presses us out of our comfort zone. It is the transformation or modification of an organization. Organization change occurs when business strategies or major sections of an organization are altered. It is also known as reorganization, restructuring and turnaround.

3. Identify and explain five areas in organizations that may require change. The entrance of a new competitor into a market can cause a business to change its marketing strategy. For example, a small hometown business might have to change its marketplace when a large chain store opens nearby. The hometown business might not be able to compete in price, but can use advertising to position itself as the friendly, service-oriented local alternative. Innovations in technology can force a business to change just to keep up. Employees might need trained on a new computer system and the business might need to implement technological change to increase efficiency and have better customer service. Businesses that want to attain growth might need to change their method of operations. A business might need to implement new production processes to become more efficient and eliminate waste. Changes in government regulations can have an impact on how a company does business. Examples include: safety procedures and quality control measures for customer safety.

If changes are occurring in an organization (strategic changes, tactical changes, leadership changes, technology changes) then those changes are going to have impacts and effects on your people and processes. To help minimize those impacts and effects, from having unintended negative outcomes, it is necessary to have “change management” methodologies in place with skilled resources delivering and executing on those methodologies principles and processes. This helps minimize possible negative outcomes and increase positive results. In my opinion Organization Development is necessary for organization change because change management methods are just one of many tools in your toolkit used to help achieve positive organizational improvements.

5. What is Organization Development?

It is an ongoing, systematic process of implementing positive and effective organizational change. Organizational Development is known as both a field of applied behavioral science and as a field of scientific study and inquiry. It is interdisciplinary in nature and draws on many other disciplines such as sociology, psychology, communication, cultural anthropology organizational behavior, economics, political science, theories of motivation, learning, and personality. Organizational Development is a deliberately planned, organization-wide effort to increase an organization's effectiveness and/or efficiency and/or to enable the organization to achieve its strategic goal
