How I can help the community in which I work to address the
barriers that prevent learning within our school environment.

“Barriers to learning are problems or situations that prevent learners from accessing programs, make it difficult for
learners to go to class or make it hard for learners to
concentrate and learn.” www.esl.literacy.com

St. Lucia, Northern Kwa-Zulu Natal, my hometown. This is a
very popular holiday and tourist destination but who would think that on our doorstep we have two of the poorest communities
with some of the highest unemployment levels in the country, Khula Village & Dukuduku forest. This is rural Zululand.

The Socio-Economic Barriers within these rural communities
are extremely high. The Lack of access to basic services like Transport to school and access to the local clinics is
non-existing at present.

By using the Taxi services that is

already in use for the working class commuters we could get a low budget transport service for far off children to be transported to school and back. Poverty and underdevelopment is a major
problem in these rural communities. It is not possible for all these thousand of people to seek employment in the small town of St. Lucia, therefore families are unable to provide the basic

necessities for decent living conditions.
