What is ageism? How does ageism influence the presence of diversity in society?

According to text, ageism is defined as prejudice and discrimination against older adults, which reflects a deep uneasiness among young and middle-aged people about growing old. For many, old age symbolizes disease and death, which serves as a reminder that they too may become old and infirm one day. The presence of ageism influences diversity in society because the elderly are the ones afflicted by it. In society today younger generations are being hired to replace experienced older workers because some employers feel that younger workers are more productive (p. 395-396). However, if employers were to only seek younger employees there would be a lack of diversity within working environments.

What is the Age Discriminitation in Employment Act (ADEA)? How does the ADEA address issues for the aging population?

The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act (ADEA) of 1967 was passed to protect workers of age 40 years or older from being fired because of their age and replaced with younger workers who presumably would receive lower salaries (p. 396). The federal Age Discrimination in Employment Act has been able to address particular issues concerning the aging population in ways that prohibit employers from discrimination against persons 40 years or older in hiring, discharge, compensation, terms, and conditions or privileges of employment. It too prohibits discrimination regarding benefit programs and retirement plans. Additionally, the Age and Discrimination in Employment Act includes limiting, segregating, or classifying an employee in a way that could deprive them of an employment opportunity. Even with the ADEA, age continues to work against many older people, as evidenced by how long it takes them to find employment, wage losses they experience when they do become reemployed, and the size of court awards to victims of age discrimination (He,Sengupta, Velkoff, and DeBarros 2005).

What is being done to address the issues you identified?

In regards to issue of ageism for the aging population the federal government has enacted many laws prohibiting discrimination against individuals based upon their age since the 1960’s. These laws apply in all states prohibiting age discrimination in employment, housing options, the delivery of services and benefits from federally-assisted programs and services, and the granting of credit. In regards to issues of retirement for the aging population Automatic Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are being encouraged. Automatic IRAs are being encouraged so that people can save for retirement by allowing their employers to regularly transfer an amount from their paycheck into one. Additionally, issues of neglect and abuse are being addressed with legislatures in all 50 states passing some form of elder abuse prevention laws. Community collaborations, civil attorneys, and trial lawyers are also playing increasingly active roles to educate the public and professionals in this area.
