Integrity vs Dispair

this stage of life the older population either feels satisfaction for the way their life has been or despair at the things they haven’t done. My grandmother is in what Erickson calls the 8th stage of her life cycle. Erickson The older generation or adults face many challenges. They experience an increase in physical, social, and psychological issues. People are living longer because of the advancements in medical technology as well as the availability of it. During considers this to start at sixty- five and end at the time of death. Erickson calls this stage “integrity versus despair”. Those who feel satisfied with their accomplishments will feel a sense of integrity. Positively completing this phase means looking back with few regrets and a general feeling of fulfillment. This population will attain wisdom, even when confronting their own death, as well as those around them. Those feeling proud of their accomplishments will feel a sense of integrity. Those who are unsuccessful during this phase will feel that their life has been wasted and will experience many regrets. The individual will be left with feelings of bitterness and despair. In this paper, I will discuss how my grandmother is doing at this stage in her life cycle.


My grandmother will be ninety this year. The things she has seen and done amaze me every time I talk to her. She was born in Indiana, but now resides in Ohio. She lost her husband nineteen years ago to emphysema. She doesn’t dwell on his death, but looks forward to when they will meet again.

She is not on any consistent medications. She says she only takes a few Motrin every time her knee aches a little. She says her appetite is good and eats a muffin for breakfast, a half sandwich for lunch and a light dinner. She says she is still in good health because she has stayed active physically as well as mentally.

My grandmother gets social security, and lives off a retirement fund that she had set up earlier...
