RATIONALE
In addition to the basic functions of management, the changing nature of managerial work emphasises the importance of facilitating, developing and integrating the organisation’s human, physical and other resources, This unit examines current approaches to managing and leading, and the challenges of managing contemporary organisations amid discontinuous change.

AIM
The aim of this unit is to provide you with the key knowledge and skills you will need to become an effective and informed manager in a changing global environment. It will provide a basic foundation for further development of management theories and concepts. It examines management processes, structures and techniques, with specific reference to Australia and the Pacific Rim.

OBJECTIVES

Upon completion of this unit, you should be able to:

1. Apply management theories, models and principles to practice through analysis of an organisation and contemporary business events to develop options for future action.

2. Critically analyse and describe the challenges and opportunities in an organisation's external and internal environments, and significant issues for management for productivity, innovation and competitive edge in the future.

APPROACHES TO TEACHING AND LEARNING
The unit is designed to introduce you to the theory and practice of management in organisations. You are encouraged to relate the theories discussed to real-life examples and to take a critical approach to analysis. Interactive class workshops incorporate information and application activities. Each week's information topic will be based on readings as indicated in the table below. You should read the specified readings before class workshops to facilitate discussion.

External (i.e. online) students should note that they can access and interact with the teaching team during scheduled classes as the workshops will be streamed live through QUT’s Echo 360 system. This means students can log in to the classroom from a desktop computer, watch and listen to what is happening in the classroom and ask questions or make comments to the teaching team in real time (please note that interactive live streaming is not yet available for mobile devices). The interactive class workshops will also be recorded and made available for revision purposes.

Further information for accessing and using the Echo 360 system and details of relevant readings will be made available on the MGN409 Blackboard site: http://blackboard.qut.edu.au and the CMD site under the Learning Resources tab. Information on assessment tasks and requirements will be provided in class meetings and on Blackboard.
