1.Understand why effective communication is important in adult social care settings. 1.1 Identify the different reasons people communicate.
a) They want to express their wishes, thoughts, believes etc. b) They do not want to be lonely.
c) They want their needs to be met.
1.2 Explain how communication affects relationships in an adult social care setting. Good communication helps to meet individual’s needs and improve the quality of people’s lives. People feel not isolated, they feel that they are in community, where they could get support, help. The ability to communicate well helps to build good working relationships. Communication can have a positive or negative effect on everything you do at work.

2. Understand how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual. 2.1Compare ways to establish the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual. You can discover communication issues by observing an individual. You can find out about how a person communicates and what the differences are between his or her way of communicating and your own. Observation should be able to establish:

Which language is being used.
If there is any disability or physical illness.
If there is a learning disability.
If the service user experiences any hearing or visual impairment. Also you can discuss with colleagues who have worked with the individual before and who have background information and advice. Consulting other professionals who have worked before.

Reading care plan/history. Finding out about individual’s particular illness or disability. Taliking to family and friends.
Any of these factors could have a bearing on how well you will be able to communicate with someone and what steps you may need to take to make things easier. 2.2 Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication. Effective communication involves many skills, which include: Caring valuable relationship

Listening skills
Non-verbal communication
Using appropriate language
Using the right pace and tone
Exploring new and other ways to communicate.

The things necessary to form relationships are the practice of all of the values and principles, knowledge of human behaviour, a knowledge of the person and also that bit extra- the oomph factor. Oomph factor:

Genuine interest (likes/dislikes)
Positive self disposition.
2.3 Describe a range of communication methods and styles to meet the individual needs. Communication is much more than talking. It is about how people respond to each other in many different ways: facial expression, touch, body movements. When we communicate with people we usually use a verbal or spoken language and non-verbal communication or body language. Non-verbal communication:

Facial expressions
Physical contact/touch (when the person is distressed or upset).

Non-verbal communication may include:
a warm smile, open welcoming gestures, friendly tone of voice, confident manner, calm gestures and movements. Also offering physical help- e.g. a guiding arm to an elderly or distraught person; personal space. Verbal communication:

Use of friendly words that show respect
Expression of a wish to help
Clear explanation of what the care worker is trying to do
Reassurance about confidentiality.
Help and understanding has to be shown through empathy, acceptance and being non-judgemental. We need to respect individual’s identity and beliefs. 2.4...
