The first thing people think of when they hear the word prostitution is a whore who walks down the street and sell herself for money. The previous statement is not completely invalid, but prostitution comes in several variations, and many prostitutes do what they do for different reasons. When asked the first word that comes to mind when you hear the word prostitution, many answers were whore, slut, money, and sex. Prostitution comes in two main forms – direct and indirect, not every prostitute is your average “whore.” Common forms of direct prostitution are street, brothel, and escort. “Streetwalkers” are what most people think of when they think of prostitution, these are the prostitutes that work on the streets and many other public places. They make little money and they are very vulnerable. Brothels are businesses that strictly provide sexual services. Although these work conditions are significantly better, the workers still are exploited because they share their profits with the owner. Brothels often use the window/door way method to attract clients. This is when a work is “put out on display” in a public area. Escort services are available when the client contacts the worker. Escorts often bring a lot of profit because they don’t have as many clients, therefore they charge more. Escorts often come to the client’s home or to a hotel room. There are also escort agencies that usually work out of hotels. They charge high prices and the workers face exploitation because the agency gets a portion of the profit. Although there are several types of direct prostitution, street, brothel and escort are the common categories, with many subcategories. Common forms of indirect prostitution are clubs, massage parlors, beer girls, Femme libre are a few of many indirect forms. The common trait amongst these is they almost all have a “front”.
