Dictionary defines prostitution as "the offering of the body to indiscriminate lewdness for hire". A prostitute has been defined as "a person who makes it a profession to gratify the lust of various persons of the opposite or the same sex". The above definitions are noted to have included both male and female prostitutes contrary to others such as the one in Stones Justices' Manual that defines prostitution as "the offering for reward by a female of her body commonly. Prostitution
Is the act or practice of providing sexual services to another person in return for payment. The person who receives payment for sexual services is called a prostitute and the person who receives such services is known by a multitude of terms, including "john". Prostitution is one of the branches of the sex industry. The legal status of prostitution varies from country to country, from being a punishable crime to a regulated profession. Estimates place the annual revenue generated from the global prostitution industry to be over $100 billion. Prostitution is sometimes referred to as "the world's oldest profession". Prostitution occurs in a variety of forms. Brothels are establishments specifically dedicated to prostitution. In escort prostitution, the act may take place at the customer's residence or hotel room (referred to as out-call), or at the escort's residence or in a hotel room rented for the occasion by the escort (called in-call). Another form is street prostitution. Sex tourism refers to travelling, typically from developed to under-developed nations, to engage in sexual activity with prostitutes. Sex trafficking, one type of human trafficking is defined as using coercion or force to transport an unwilling person into prostitution or other sexual exploitation.
Teenage prostitutes or “children of the night” have become one of the leading epidemics in the nation. Many more teenagers than women everyday have joined the business of prostitution in America. One million women and young girls presently work as prostitutes, with thousands of other young women turning toward the streets every day. The average age of entry into prostitution is 13 years old. The statistics are not surprising. What may be surprising, however, the toll prostitution takes on the family members of those who work in the “world’s oldest profession.” Child prostitution exists in a national scope. Pimps have become more sophisticated in their recruitment and maintenance of the children they force toward prostitution, moving their victims all around the country, often forcing them in the direction of work as prostitutes outside the larger cities and in small towns where police exist unfamiliar with the operations of child prostitution rings. Americans should organize methods towards stopping this rising epidemic because life is too precious for teens and children to waste away.
Prostitution, the oldest profession in the world, is deeply rooted in the society and this social problem is almost impossible to eradicate. In the modern society where sex is increasingly being portrayed as a service and pleasure instead of sacred and holy, the industry will only thrive. What can be done though is to concentrate on the underlying problems like reducing poverty and promulgating the rights of a woman. When women are finally not being portrayed as merely sex objects and respect for the females are on equal par with the males, the prostitution trade will gradually decline. Whether or not it can be fully done away with remains a dilemma that continues to question the morality of society.
What are the specific problems with choosing prostitution? For the vast majority of women in prostitution, it is a forced choice. Women are absorbed into prostitution for many reasons and in ways in which the whole notion of real "choice" is put into question. …As all too often in the examination of what is...
