Best Buy ROWE
This paper will discuss the culture of Best Buy. How people have a life outside of work and the flexible work schedule that they make for themselves. It will discuss the organizational change approach that the ROWE program illustrates within Best Buy. It will explain the resistance, both organizational and individual, that the ROWE program has had to overcome. It will also discuss the sources of stress that are apparent in the case and whether or not the organizational culture has helped with the change.
Describe the Culture of Best Buy
The culture at Best Buy is one where employees can have a life outside of work. They can spend time with their families, take care of personal business, or enjoy a game of golf if they choose. They have flexible schedules that allow them to flex their time as long as they produce results. Employees can work from home or from a resort; using email, phones or text messaging. As long as the work gets done they can pretty much do as they please. The only exception: “No results, no job. It’s that simple” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p.553). A program called ROWE (Results-Only Work Environment) has allowed this.
Discuss the Approach to Organizational Change that the ROWE Program Illustrates
The organizational approach that the ROWE program illustrates would be the organizational development approach. “The organizational development approach refers to developing employees’ competencies to solve problems by enabling them to identify and become emotionally committed to improving performance of the firm” (Hellriegel & Slocum, 2011, p.553). The ROWE program gives employees a chance to become a part of a process. This process allows them to make decisions and solve problems on their own.
